Professor Tim Marchant takes up a new position on January 18, 2021, as Director of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) at the University of Melbourne. AMSI represents a national voice and champion for the mathematical sciences. Its membership network includes over 40 Australian universities, mathematical societies, and government agencies.  AMSI has a strong track record of working with schools, universities, industry, philanthropists, government, and the community to help shape policy and skills development in Australia.

Tim commenced employment at UOW 32 years ago, firstly as a postdoctoral fellow, then as a teaching and research academic, in the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics.  Tim’s UOW appointments include Head of School and a university wide role as Dean of Research, which included leadership responsibilities for graduate research, research strategy and university rankings. He chaired the UOW University Rankings Strategy Advisory Committee and has been a member of numerous other committees and working parties, including Senate, and the University Teaching, Research and Internationalisation Committees.

Tim’s last day at UOW is Nov 27, 2020, though he will maintain his current research collaborations through an Honorary Professorial appointment.

We thank Tim for his decades of dedication to UOW and the Research Portfolio and wish him every success in his new endeavour with AMSI.
