Welcoming a new child to your family is one of the most precious times in a parent’s life.

To support you during this time, and ensure that you can focus on your family, UOW has a comprehensive parental leave scheme – and it’s not just for mums! Having shared parental leave allows for family bonding, as well as more equal parenting and career roles within families.

Did you know?

  • Either parent is able to access primary carer leave;
  • If both parents work at UOW you are able to share the primary care leave allowance;
  • If you are not planning to be the primary carer, you are still eligible for two weeks of partner leave.
Case Study: meet Pat!

Pat Murray is the Manager, Controls, Compliance and Projects in HR and has worked at UOW for the past 3 years.

In 2019, Pat and his partner welcomed their first baby, Benjamin. In the lead up to Benjamin’s arrival, Pat discussed leave and timing options with his Director. In particular, the ability to work part-time allowed him to balance family and work responsibilities.

‘My Senior Manager and Director were really supportive. The ability to use the Return to Work Grant to work part-time and be with my family was invaluable. Those early memories can’t be replaced.’

In other exciting news for Pat, baby no. 2 is due to arrive in early November, and Pat will again be taking primary carer leave to allow him to be there for those memorable moments. We wish them all the very best.
