Dear Colleagues,

The last week has seen significant change as the coronavirus epidemic continues. I wanted to start by thanking each and every one of you for continuing to work hard to deliver for our students and our University community. I am incredibly proud of how we’ve remained a caring, supportive and compassionate community in such uncertain times.

Given the rapidity of change, I wanted to give you all an update and re-cap on where things currently stand:

Closure of some campus facilities in line with government mandates

To comply with the latest government regulations, UniActive at the Wollongong and Innovation campuses, the prayer room and UniBar have been closed. As outdoor sports facilities were not closed by the government directive, the UniActive pool will remain open with strict social distancing rules applying, both in the pool and in the change rooms. The swim school is closed for the remainder of Term 1 and not taking enrolments for Term 2.

Some café outlets have chosen to close. Those remaining open will be offering takeaway only. Our food courts are open for purchasing takeaway, but closed for dining.

Staff training: Preparing to teach online

A university-wide collaborative effort is underway to prepare for remote delivery. LTC are delivering an intensive program to support faculties and staff with their online delivery initiatives.

Late Friday, the government released additional guidelines with regards to social distancing. In response, we have had to make changes to our upcoming “Preparing to Teach Online” program.
All training sessions will proceed as planned, however they will now be delivered online via webinar (Webex Meetings). There will be no face-to-face sessions.

The webinars support the Preparing to Teach Online self-paced modules that will be available in Moodle from today, Tuesday 24 March 2020. The online modules and supporting webinars form a complete program designed to prepare for the transition to online teaching. It is not essential to have completed the Moodle modules prior to participating in the webinar as we will provide an overview and walk through the key steps. Find out more and sign up to this training on the L&T Portal.

Hygiene and social distancing

Please remember to keep up good hygiene practises, including regular hand washing, and to maintain the recommended social distancing of 1.5 metres. Signs will be going up in meeting rooms around campus to let staff know how many people should be in a room at one time.

Keep checking the COVID-19 response webpage, FAQs and MyUOW app

UOW’s coronavirus response webpage has been re-built to accommodate growing informational needs, with FAQs specific to staff and students (including current and future students, UOW College students and students in UOW accommodation).

Please also install the MyUOW app on your smartphone and check the message feed for the latest coronavirus information.

Again, thank you for your continued support, flexibility and patience at this time.

Damien Israel,
Chief Operating Officer
