How long have you worked at UOW?
I started my employment in January 2017. Hence, it has been around 2 and a half years.
What’s your/your team’s role at the University?
I am a lecturer of Accounting, at the School of Accounting Economics and Finance, Faculty of Business and Law. My role involves, 40% research, 40% teaching and 20% governance.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
I feel very passionately about my research, which draws on the genre of Social and Environmental Accounting, focusing specifically on issues of women’s empowerment in developing country contexts. Drawing on this area of research, I focus on bringing a social justice and human rights lens to accounting education. I believe education is a powerful way of fostering long-term transformative changes, and engaging with students in this regard has been the most rewarding part of my job.
What’s the most challenging?
Living apart from family, back in Bangladesh. I am a first generation immigrant in Australia.
Proudest work achievement at UOW?
Recently, a paper from my PhD got published in Accounting, Organisations and Society journal, an A* ranked journal with 95% rejection rate. This has given me a much needed confidence boost and motivation to keep working hard.
What goals are you/your team working towards in 2020?
Be able to provide students with a great online learning experience; continue to work on my research papers and publications.
What’s your fondest memory so far of working at UOW?
I had organised a workshop hosting my mentor, Professor Judy Brown from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, during 2018. It was just really lovely taking Judy around the campus, introducing her to colleagues at UOW, and spending quality time with her.
Random fact about you or hidden talent?
I am a trained (classical Bengali/Indian music) singer.
What’s your favourite place in the world and why?
My family home back in Bangladesh, where my parents are.

See the northern lights and set up my cupcake making business.
