The Australian Government has recently announced $12 million in funding for a new research program for academics to pursue research on Australian issues, focusing on Australian society, history and culture.

This Special Research Initiative (SRI) will support research into all aspects of Australian society, history and culture – from ancient Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander beginnings to modern-day Australia. Research can be in a range of diverse areas of Australian life including community, institutions, literature, art, music, philosophy, language, media, politics and geography.

Research funded under this initiative is intended to give a greater understanding about modern Australia, including its origins and the events that have shaped it. The ARC wish to build Australian research capacity in this area by supporting researchers of the highest international standing, expecting to fund approximately 40 projects, providing between $20,000 and $100,000 each year for up to three years.

More information about the Special Research Initiative is available on the ARC website.

The Research Services Office will soon disseminate further information regarding internal submission timelines for UOW applicants and an upcoming SRI information session.
