As part of the IMTS Unified Communications and Collaboration (UCC) Strategy, the use of softphones across UOW will become the primary method of telephony moving forward.

A soft phone is an application which when installed on a PC, tablet or phone allows it to make and receive phone calls over an internet connection. If the application is run on a mobile phone, calls are delivered via their data instead of their mobile phone number, and as such, there will be no call charge. Webex is used as the softphone application at UOW.

Desk phones that are currently in use across UOW have a reliance on a traditional on-premises server infrastructure and were deployed in 2008 and are coming to end-of-life.

A comprehensive Knowledge Base Article UOW Switch to Softphones & FAQ has been developed to answer questions you may have regarding the removal of desk phones, including information on which phones will not be removed, how to use a softphone, headsets, having new phones set up and more.

IMTS will begin the removal of desk phones on Monday 30 November 2021, and will work to have finalised removal by December 22, 2021 as majority will stop working when the calling service moves to cloud at the end of the year.
