Being a student can be stressful. Exams, assignments, work, rent and bills tend to pile up and this can become a little overwhelming. UOW Pulse’s Wellness by UniLife program is designed to help students remember to take a step back, practice self-care and to care for others.

Random Acts of Kindness is a volunteer-run event that has been hugely successful for the Wellness by UnilIfe program in 2019. Run by Wellness Ambassadors, it is designed to encourage people to be kind to each other, especially those they don’t know, without any specific reason. The act makes student volunteers feel better and the recipients feel better too, which then makes them more likely to be kind to other people.

The program works by surprising students with items such as a message of encouragement, a small treat or a pre-payed parking permit. Not only does this brighten the day of the recipient, but it also encourages them to pay it forward and practice random acts of kindness in their own lives.

This session the Random Act’s of Kindness volunteers handed out:

  • Handwritten words of encouragement
  • Donuts with positive messages
  • Flowers
  • Pre-payed parking permits
  • Chocolates
  • Coffee vouchers
  • Lunch vouchers
  • Toiletry items in bathrooms (Hair ties, deodorant etc.)

With the success and positive feedback on the 2019 program, plans are in place to continue Random Acts of Kindness in 2020.
