What is happening?

There has been wonderful work happening in Wollongong and Sydney to support students who are struggling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many domestic and international students are extremely vulnerable at this time and are experiencing significant financial stress. In an attempt to alleviate student hunger, UOW has implemented a number of support measures, including working with generous community organisations to provide meals (fresh and frozen), groceries and other supplies to students.

How can I support?

There are a number of different ways that you can support this work, including:

Volunteer in Wollongong or Sydney
Wollongong

Day: Wednesday, 4:00pm – 5:00pm

Task: Packing items. Your role is to sort like items to make it easier for the Thursday volunteers to transport items up to Sydney. You will be required to sort and pack grocery items into individual ‘pantry packs’ for students.

Location: UniLife Clubs Room (located behind the UniLife Office, Building 11)

Volunteers required: 2-3 people per shift

 

Day: Fridays before 10:30am

Task: Collect food and grocery items from Shellharbour Community Church and transport to the university. The items are to be delivered to Building 11 (behind the UniLife offices) and we can arrange to have other staff with trolleys greet you at the multi-storey car park and help you to unpack.

Location: Shellharbour Community Church, 500 Shellharbour Rd, Shellharbour NSW 2529 and UOW, Building 11

Volunteers required: 2 people per shift

 

Day: Friday, 4:00pm – 5:00pm

Task: Sorting items. Your role is to sort like items to make it easier for the Saturday volunteers to set up the following day. You will be required to do a quality check on donated items and remove any unsuitable products (further instructions will be provided). You will then sort like items into separate containers so that they can be easily placed on the tables over the weekend (e.g. all flour together, all rice together etc).

Location: UniLife Clubs Room (located behind the UniLife Office, Building 11)

Volunteers required: 2-3 people per shift

 

Day: Saturdays, 10:15am – 12:45pm

Task: Set up, pack down, marshalling students, event support. Your role is to work with the community organisations and fellow volunteers to provide meals and groceries to students in need. You will be required to set up and pack down tables, lay out stock, marshal students to ensure physical distancing principles are adhered to, and liaise with community organisations and Security as needed.

Location: UniHall, Wollongong

Volunteers required: 5 people per shift

 

Sydney

Day: Wednesdays, 11:45am – 1:15pm

Task: Meet our community partner (Turbans 4 Australia) to hand out pantry packs to students between 12pm – 1pm.

Location: Sargent’s Centre, Blacktown

Volunteers required: 2-3 people per shift

 

Day: Thursday, all day

Task: Drive pre-assembled ‘pantry packs’ to students in Strathfield and Redfern. This is quite a lengthy process and you would need to allow several hours.

Location: Travel from Wollongong to Strathfield and Redfern
